Matted Release

It is a goal of Barking Mad, LLC to make your pet’s grooming experience as stress free and comfortable as possible.

Undercoat and hair removal becomes necessary when a coat is tangled beyond the ability to brush through it. The most humane method is to shave off the matted hair. Shaving may seem severe, but it is the least stressful and least painful way to groom a matted pet. Cosmetic appearance is secondary at this time. Any other method of removal is too painful for your pet in such a condition.

We do NOT offer full de-matting services, but we do offer partial de-matting services. When Possible we will work to de-mat/brush any hair that may be saved, but only if it will not cause excessive pain and stress to do so. There may be an additional charge for this service.

($1-per minute or $15 for every 15 minutes)

It is fairly common to find pre-existing conditions that become apparent only when the matted coat is removed. Our groomers will always bring anything he/she may notice to the owner's attention. Barking Mad, LLC groomers cannot diagnose conditions but may advise that the owner seek veterinary care for the pet.

Matted Coats and mat removal can cause the following problems:

  • As mats get tighter, they eventually pull out of the skin, causing bald spots and sore skin

  • Heavy matting can also trap moisture and urine near the pet’s skin, allowing mold, fungus or bacteria to grow.

  • Mats inhibit proper air circulation to the skin causing increased body heat in these areas. This creates an ideal environment for many skin related health problems (bacterial/fungal infections, hot spots)

  • Skin pulling. This results in chafing and abrasion over time and causes pain when your pet moves

  • Working so closely to the skin increases the risk for stress, trauma, or injury. All precautions will be taken, however, some problems may arise such as nicks or clipper irritation.

  • Mats created an ideal environment for parasites such as fleas and ticks. If either is found, Barking Mad, LLC will call and advise you of next steps(Veterinary care, special shampoos)

  • Hematomas are likely after removal of mats due to the blood rushing back to the area, It is most common in ears and the pressure from the pet shaking their head after mats have been removed.

  • Sunburn if your dog is kept outside for long periods of time after mat removal. Prevention includes, pet sunscreen, skin coverage, and/or reduced time outside.

Barking Mad, LLC staff will be more than happy to show you the necessary tools needed and how to care for your pet’s coat so that matting does not occur. Your pet must be brushed and combed thoroughly on a regular basis, either by a groomer or someone at home.

I have read and understand the above. I am aware that my pet has matted hair. I understand the risks. I authorize Barking Mad, LLC to proceed with the de-matting process and to shave off any and/or all matted hair necessary. I also know that the cut may be shorter than I wish. Should my pet need any veterinary care during or after this process, I agree to pay any and all veterinarian fees.
